Essay mode reads your writing the way a strong English teacher or academic reader would. Fracture does not force every piece into a debate-case structure — the writing can be analytical, explanatory, narrative, persuasive, or literary, and the report evaluates it on the terms that actually matter for that kind of writing. Use Essay mode whenever the primary goal is a polished, well-structured piece of writing rather than winning a formal argument.

When to Use Essay Mode

  • Analytical and interpretive essays
  • Explanatory and expository writing
  • Literary analysis
  • Narrative writing
  • College application essays and personal statements
  • Persuasive academic work where essay craft matters as much as the argument

How to Run It

1

Choose Essay Mode

In the Studio, set the draft type to Essay.
2

Pick a Depth

Choose Surface for a quick scan of thesis clarity and paragraph structure, or Medium for a full audit covering transitions, evidence integration, grammar, tone, and a complete set of sentence-level repairs.
3

Paste and Run

Paste your draft into the draft field and run Fracture. The report streams in as it is built.

What It Prioritizes

  • Thesis or central idea — whether it is clear, arguable, and present from the start
  • Paragraph structure — whether each paragraph does a clear, distinct job
  • Transitions and overall flow — how smoothly the piece moves from one idea to the next
  • Evidence integration — whether your sources and examples are woven in cleanly or dropped in without context
  • Grammar, sentence clarity, tone, and word choice — the sentence-level craft that shapes how a reader experiences the piece
  • Conclusion — whether it earns its place by doing something beyond restating the introduction

What You Get

Essay mode returns essay-specific repairs: grammar and syntax fixes, paragraph reordering suggestions, transition improvements, a sharper thesis statement, a cleaner evidence sandwich, and more natural academic language. Critical reasoning is still applied when your essay makes claims, but the report does not over-index on opponent attacks unless the piece is explicitly argumentative — the feedback stays calibrated to what an academic reader or instructor would actually care about.

Critical Reasoning in Essay Mode

When your essay advances a claim, Fracture still checks whether that claim is supported and whether the reasoning holds. The difference from Argument mode is proportion: Essay mode will not bury paragraph-structure feedback under a full attack tree. If your piece is explicitly argumentative — a persuasive essay or a position-driven analytical paper — and you want full logical pressure-testing, consider running it through Argument mode as a second pass.
Writing a college essay or personal statement? Choose Essay mode. It evaluates voice, specificity, and narrative arc — the things admissions readers respond to — rather than grading you on debate-case structure. See the college essays guide for tips on getting the most out of the report.
